How to Care for Your Lawn When It’s Really Hot

How to Care for Your Lawn When It’s Really Hot

Summer Lawn Care – It’s tough during hot, sunny summer weather to keep your lawn looking green and healthy. It’s a challenge, but you can maintain the lawn you worked hard to establish this spring, even through the summer heat.

Here are a few key strategies:

Water Wisely

In the heat, water your lawn deeply but less frequently to encourage deeper root growth. Aim for about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, either from rainfall or watering. Also, water early in the morning to give the grass time to absorb moisture before the heat sets in. This will also minimize evaporation – no use letting all that expensive water evaporate instead of benefitting your lawn!

Mow Smart

Raise the cutting height on your mower during hot months. Taller grass shades the soil, retaining moisture and reducing stress on your grass. Also, avoid mowing when it’s extremely hot as this can cause further stress on the grass and lead to browning.

Feed and Fertilize Lightly

Fertilizing in the heat can harm your lawn if you fertilize too heavy. Instead, focus on lighter, balanced feeding. This will provide necessary nutrients without overwhelming your grass during this vulnerable time.

Control Weeds and Pests

Heat can make your lawn more susceptible to pests and weeds. But herbicides and pesticides can also be too harsh on already-weak grass. Use herbicides and pesticides sparingly, and follow product instructions closely, to prevent overuse. Also, consider organic solutions to minimize chemical stress on your lawn.

Avoid Foot Traffic

Hot weather weakens grass, making it more susceptible to damage. Reducing foot traffic and keeping vehicles or heavy items off your lawn will prevent compacting the soil and damaging the roots.

By following these tips, you can help your lawn stay resilient through the summer and bounce back stronger when the temperatures drop!
